NASHiCS Forum September 2016
The forum was held in a hotel situated among the new waterside developments taking place opposite Lincoln University campus with a view from the 5th floor over the Cityscape.
The busy day consisted of a variety of engaging speakers with an opportunity to meet the forum sponsors and exhibitors, EMP, Respect, Marpal, Nant and NIFES, in the viewing gallery.
After the opening remarks from the National Chair, Chris Jackson, the seminar got underway with a talk by Elspeth Grant from Triple A consultants who provided some different perspectives on the subject of evacuation in case of fire in social care premises with plenty of examples and scenarios.
Delegates then had a choice between a presentation by Deborah Harrison from A1 Risk Solutions and Julia Gardner Quant from Pioneering Independence.
Deborah introduced a new training initiative based upon the use of video playback in the workplace to reinforce learning in the classroom. Video clips can be used to demonstrate safe systems of work before manoeuvres are carried out so that care workers can check their understanding where necessary. The evidence gathered suggests that outcomes are improved when this additional aid is available.
Julia on the other hand gave an insight into the varied and vital role that Health & Safety Advisers can fulfill when working in specialist areas of Social Care – in this case supporting “forensic” clients back into society. The complexity and scope of support needed for both staff and clients was explained in some detail using fascinating examples.
After a refreshment break Dr Margaret Flynn, Chair of the Independent Safeguarding Board of Wales, gave a thought-provoking run through her report entitled “In search of accountability” which she carried out for the Welsh government. The report covered the police investigation into neglect of older people in care in Wales and the events that have followed the exposure of massive failings to provide proper care.
It is inaction by the authorities that has concerned many people, especially the families involved, and the report is required reading for anyone involved in Social Care.
The final session of the morning came from Emmie Galilee, Head of Health & Social Care Services HSE, who gave a useful update of the work being carried out by the HSE, including consultations, their plans for the coming year and some examples of recent cases.
After lunch, Sean Elson and Gareth McManus from Pinsent Masons LLP, presented the delegates with a legal update and a run through some recent cases related to Social Care including the outcome of a FOI request for data from some regulators.
The final session of the day came from Paul Howes, Primary Authority Scheme Manager at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service. He covered the vital issue of fire safety in Social Care including audit outcomes, case studies and recent fire investigation followed by an interactive question time.
