Profiles

Sarah Smith, Assistant Director for Health and Safety – The Order of St Johns Care Trust.

When I left university back in 1994, I was offered a development project at The Welsh Office in Cardiff implementing the new European H&S Directives. I had not been involved with H&S previously and my degree was unrelated. I really enjoyed the subject matter and quickly decided that this was what I wanted to do as a career. I liked the variety and different elements of H&S i.e. the legal side, occupational health, incidents and stats, strategy and planning, risk assessment, training delivery, consultation and all the different places and topics that you can get involved with on a daily basis as well as all the different people! No chance to get bored!  I was lucky enough to be supported in my studies through the NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma and also a Masters Degree over the next 10 years where I worked as Principle H&S Manager at a large local authority and then became the Lead H&S Adviser within the NHS for Organ Donation and Transplantation as well as for the Blood Collections Teams. I have been working within the social care sector since 2015. It was then that I became aware of Nashics, as The Orders of St John Care Trust, where I work, have been long standing corporate members. Since then and have found it an invaluable forum for networking with others in the sector, providing great quality sector specific events and training and also for providing really helpful information and updates particularly via the monthly e-news.

I joined the National Executive last year and have led the Benchmarking Group. I am now Joint Vice Chair. I think it is an exciting time to be part of Nashics. I see it growing and developing further over the next couple of years and being even more relevant within the sector, in particular helping the smaller providers and being the strong voice.
