Team Manager, Corporate Health and Safety Team at Derby City Council

My NASHiCS journey began over 20 years ago representing Derby City Council in my role as a Social Care Health and Safety Adviser with other Local Authorities as a member of NASHiCS predecessor and then became a founding member of NASHiCS 20 years ago and one of its leading actors, if you ever witnessed one of its mock trials! At the 10th anniversary summer conference, I was lucky enough to be awarded the H&S Adviser of the year award.

Local Authorities joined forces to work together to ensure H&S in Social Care had a voice, the sharing of best practice to avoid duplication of effort and ultimately raising standards by supporting providers across the UK to understand and implement complicated H&S requirements within social care settings.

Over the last 20 years local authority membership has been overtaken by providers of care which reflects the changes in social care provision.  NASHiCS has been and remains at the forefront of these changes and the impact on H&S in social care. I and the City Council remain members of NASHiCS as there is still much work to do in social care, there are new challenges, such as workplace mental health, stress and ever-increasing incidents of violence and aggression within social care towards our workforce, I want to continue via NASHiCS to support providers and commissioners of care in addressing those new challenges across both children’s and adult social care.
